Since 2016, it has been a legal requirement for dogs to be microchipped, and as of June 10, 2024, the same applied to all owned cats older than 20 weeks in England. If your cat isn’t microchipped after this date, you could face a fine of up to £500.
Microchipping helps reunite families
If your pet goes missing, a microchip significantly increases the chances of being reunited. In fact, microchipped dogs are twice as likely to return home than those without chips. This small chip can also help identify owners who may have abandoned their pets.
It’s your responsibility to keep details up-to-date
Make sure your contact information on the DEFRA-compliant database is always current, so you can be reached quickly if your pet is found. If you’re unsure which database your pet is registered with, visit Identibase and use their ‘check a chip’ tool.
Don’t wait for disaster to strike
Many owners assume their pet won’t stray, but stress or fear (such as during fireworks) can trigger your pet to run away. It’s better to be prepared.
Dog Owners: Don’t Forget the Tag!
In addition to a microchip, the law requires all dogs to wear a collar and ID tag in public. The tag must display the owner’s name and address, and failing to comply can result in a fine of up to £2,000.
